Steven Gerrard is “desperate” to sign a creative midfielder in the summer transfer window as he aims to add to his Rangers squad, according to the Scottish Sun.

The newspaper claims that even though Steven Davis has agreed to join the Gers on a permanent deal from Southampton at the end of the season, Gerrard wants a playmaker who can craft opportunities for the forward players.

It is understood that Rangers are in advanced talks with Birmingham striker Greg Stewart about a summer switch while Jordan Jones and Jake Hastie, along with Davis, have agreed pre-contract deals with the Glasgow giants.

OPINION

Rangers have lacked an attacking midfielder who can dictate play and supply a steady stream of assists for the forward players this season. Scott Arfield has done well in that role but he is not someone who you would say is creative. Davis has started to come more into that role lately but it is understandable why Gerrard would want a midfield creator. Rangers are more than likely going to have a change of strikers in the summer with Alfredo Morelos widely-linked with a move away from Ibrox. Birmingham’s Stewart is not a terrible player, but he is not an upgrade on Morelos, Jermain Defoe and arguably Kyle Lafferty. Gerrard does not need squad players, he needs players who can walk into that starting line-up and make an impact. Stewart would not be anywhere near the top of the pecking order so it is strange to see the Gers trying so hard to sign him.
