Everton are in pursuit of River Plate midfielder Santiago Sosa and are ready to “shell out” £13.1million to sign the Argentina Under-20 international in the summer, according to OneFootball.

The Argentine news outlet claims that the Toffees have been keeping close tabs on Sosa, 20, and are now ready to follow up their interest by tabling an eight-figure offer.

It is understood that Sosa’s agent Hernán Berman will jet into the UK and head to Goodison Park in the coming days for talks with Everton about his clients potential switch to the Premier League.

Good move for Everton?

It is really hard to say because Sosa has only ever made five first team appearances for River Plate.

The 20-year-old is a defensive-minded central midfielder who is one of the more highly-rated younger players at El Monumental.

Marcel Brands is bound to have done his research on Sosa, but considering his lack of experience, spending £13.1million on the midfielder might be somewhat of a risk.

Yes, fans always get excited when a young South American player makes his way to the Premier League but it seems like Brands is rolling the dice a bit here because he’s hardly proven himself in Argentina’s top-flight.

Hopefully he can be good for Everton but that money should really be put towards signing a proven centre-forward.

Likely to happen?

Sosa’s agent would not be heading to England if there wasn’t serious interest from Everton, but the chances are that Berman is going to tout his client to several clubs in Europe in a bid to get him away from River Plate.

River Plate’s fans should expect to see Sosa leave in the summer but it’s way too soon to have a guess at where he will be going.

Everton’s interest appears to be advanced but it remains to be seen whether or not a move will materialise.
