Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips is set to engage in talks with the club’s hierarchy within the next couple of days, according to the Football Insider

The reliable outlet report that the 23-year-old has become Leeds’ most sought-after player, following an impressive personal season from the midfielder as Marcelo Bielsa’s side finished third in the league before losing to Derby County in the Championship play-off semi-finals.

Phillips has only two-years left on his current contract, after it was believed Leeds held back on offering new deals to the midfielder and other important players over the course of the season, but it is now thought that the player will engage in talks with the club’s hierarchy to discuss his future with the potential for him to be offered a new deal.

It is believed that Bielsa’s future with the club could be an influential factor in whether the 23-year-old would be willing to commit his future to the club.

OPINION

It will be very interesting to see what emerges from the talks which are set to take place between Phillips and Leeds’ officials. It is vital that Leeds do everything they can to convince the midfielder to commit his future to Elland Road, with the 23-year-old a standout performer for the Whites this season having been moved into a deeper midfielder role by Bielsa. Phillips’ technical ability and calmness in possession has allowed him help build attacks for Leeds this season, whilst also ensuring that Bielsa’s side retain possession which is something the Argentine demands of his players. The 23-year-old will be a vital player for Leeds once again next season if he remains with the club, but there will be a number of clubs monitoring how these impending talks progress with a view to attempting to sign the midfielder. Were Bielsa to announce that he is going to remain Leeds’ manager next campaign it could help persuade Phillips to follow suit.
