Kris Boyd has torn Allan McGregor to shreds for getting himself sent off in Rangers’ 1-0 win against Hibernian at Ibrox on Sunday afternoon.

Even though he had just made a stunning save to keep the Light Blues ahead, McGregor for some wild reason lost his head and kicked out at Hibs forward Marc McNulty.

It seemed completely unprovoked and referee Bobby Madden was quick to send the Scottish goalkeeper off, leaving Ross McCrorie to play in goals in the final minutes.

Boyd has played with McGregor and he cannot get his head around the shot-stopper’s decision to kick out at McNulty.

“It’s madness from him,” said Boyd on Sky Sports Football after the match on Sunday [05:33pm]. “We’ve seen it before this season.”

The Kilmarnock striker added: “I’ve been in the dressing room for years and sometimes you say to yourself ‘what is Allan McGregor thinking?’ Nobody knows.

“This for me is just absolutely mental.

“He’s my friend, he’s an ex-team-mate but you can’t defend him. I don’t know what he’s thinking.

“We can’t sit here and slaughter Alfredo Morelos for what he’s done this season and not have a go at Allan McGregor. It’s mental to even contemplate turning around and kicking somebody.”

Sky Sports host Hayley McQueen then interjected: “I don’t think ‘mental’ is quite the word to use.”

OPINION

Boyd was understandably livid with McGregor after the match. He will know miss the Old Firm against Celtic next week and that is a shame for Rangers because the experienced goalkeeper showed just how good he was with a terrific save to deny Hibs an equaliser just before being sent off. It is ridiculous that a player of his experience is doing stuff like this and as Boyd says, it’s not the first time this season. This time McGregor was caught by the officials and was deservedly sent off for kicking out at McNulty. It was embarrassing that after he did it he went to the ground holding his ankle as though he was injured. It’s really pathetic behaviour and you have to start seeing him as much a liability as Morelos has been. Your best players have to also be the most reliable players and McGregor’s discipline is anything but reliable.
