Kris Boyd was blown away by Jermain Defoe’s “fantastic” finish as he scored in Rangers’ 1-0 win against Hibernian at Ibrox on Sunday afternoon.

Defoe, 36, has been in red-hot form for the Light Blues lately and scored his eighth goal for the Glasgow giants when he stuck the ball past Ofir Marciano this weekend.

Ex-Rangers striker Boyd was thrilled with what he saw from the on-loan Bournemouth ace against Hibs.

“He’s picking out those clever positions in between the centre-halves or down the side of the centre-half and the full-back,” said Boyd on Sky Sports Football at half-time on Sunday [04:23pm].

“He’s always on the last shoulder of the defender looking to go in behind

“Jermain Defoe should get away his shot earlier there but here, he’s fantastic. You see his arm go up to stop the defender going back in there. It’s a fantastic finish into the ground. No goalkeeper is saving that.

“Classic finish from Defoe, we’ve seen it over the years. You don’t expect anything else.”

OPINION

Defoe has been brilliant while standing in for the suspended Alfredo Morelos and even though the Colombia international is now available for selection, it’s hard to see anyone but the in-form Englishman starting up front against Celtic next week. Defoe may have wasted a couple of chances early on against Hibernian but he took his chance to score with great composure and that was just enough to earn the Light Blues their victory this weekend. Rangers fans should pray that Bournemouth do not recall Defoe from his loan in the summer. He joined the Gers on an 18-month loan in January but the English club can recall him in the summer or next January if they wish. If that happens that Steven Gerrard is going to need to replace him, and maybe Alfredo Morelos, who has been linked with a move away from Ibrox in the summer transfer window. Defoe might want to stay put though because of how well he’s playing.
