Tottenham are becoming increasingly confident of agreeing a new long-term deal with playmaker Christian Eriksen, according to Goal.

The news outlet claims that talks have made significant progress in recent weeks as Spurs aim to tie down the “enigmatic” 27-year-old to a deal worth over double his current £75,000-a-week package.

It is understood that there have been fears about Eriksen’s future as he will enter the final year of his contract at the end of the season and Real Madrid have been linked with signing him.

However Goal reports that Tottenham are edging closer to an agreement with the Denmark international, who wants to clarify his future in North London by the time the summer transfer window opens.

OPINION

Tottenham fans have had a rollercoaster of a week. They have reached the Champions League semi-finals, they have been dealt a blow in the race to finish in the top-four and now they are seeing that Eriksen might end up signing a new deal in North London. While it is important to not get hopes up just yet, this report by Goal is a massive boost for Spurs because Eriksen is just about one of the best playmakers in European football and must be kept by the club if they want to show any ambition. Eriksen could definitely play for a team like Real Madrid or Barcelona, so he cannot be blamed if he does eventually leave Spurs after six years of no silverware. Spurs still have a chance of winning the Champions League and reaching the final of that competition might convince Eriksen to pen a new deal. Money does talk though and if Daniel Levy can stump up an irresistible amount of cash for the playmaker, he might end up staying put.
