COMMENTARY

You would not use the phrase ‘creative spark’ to describe Newcastle United defender Paul Dummett but that was exactly what he was in the first half against Brighton on Saturday afternoon. The left back, playing in a central role as part of a back three, was given acres of space to charge into and even when he found himself in the Seagulls’ final third he was under little pressure. The Welsh international punished the home side on the south coast with a brilliant ball into Salomon Rondon which was subsequently chested down and fired home by Ayoze Perez. His defensive contributions were notable too, even if he did pick up a booking for a late challenge down the left flank. Dummett is quite often Newcastle’s unsung hero but the Toon Army were left heralding his influence this time around, and rightly so. There is a reason he is a favourite of Rafael Benitez. This performance showed exactly why that is the case.
