Manchester City are going to continue to back defender Benjamin Mendy and not pursue a new left-back in the summer, according to Sky Sports.

The broadcaster claim that Man City hope the worse of Mendy’s injury problems and have made the decision not to sign another left-back as a result.

Over his two season with the club, Mendy has only managed to make 14 Premier League starts, after rupturing his right cruciate ligament in his first season, followed by further injury concerns which needed treatment this season.

Although the defender has a history with injury problems, Guardiola now looks to be backing him ahead of the new Premier League campaign.

OPINION

Although there is absolutely no doubting his talent, City fans have all the reason to doubt whether he will stay fit or not throughout the whole of next season. Considering he has been at the Etihad since 2017, only having 14 Premier League starts to his name is a worrying sign in itself. The 24-year old full-back will have to try and stamp out his recurring injury worries going into next season, otherwise Guardiola will be forced to make a decision to replace him. Mendy has definitely been given the benefit of the doubt regarding his fitness throughout his City career so far, but his time at the club has been overshadowed by his lengthy spells on the sidelines. There are certainly players at the club who can play in his position competently, the main example being Oleksandr Zinchenko, so should he fail to maintain acceptable fitness levels again he could quite easily be replaced without the introduction of a new signing.
