Newcastle United are wanting to sell striker Dwight Gayle to Fulham in order for Tom Cairney to come the other way, according to Football Insider.

The reputable football site reports that the Magpies are willing to offload Gayle – who is currently on loan at West Brom – to the West London club as a part-exchange deal for the Fulham playmaker.

The report adds that Rafa Benitez has not given up his interest in the 28-year-old, and he is adamant that he is the player who can come into his side and provide the creativity that he craves.

Good move for Newcastle?

Seeing Gayle is a wise move, as it is clear that he cannot hack it in the Premier League. The 28-year-old can in the Championship judging by the 21 goals he has scored this season, so it makes sense to sell him to Fulham, who have just been relegated. Getting Cairney in a part-exchange would be a good deal, especially after the impact he has made this term.

Likely to happen?

It remains to be seen whether this is a move that would materialise. Benitez is keen on Cairney, but whether they would want to sign Gayle is another question. Gayle is perfectly happy at West Brom at the moment, and it would not be a surprise if the Baggies wanted to sign him permanently as well. If they do, then the likelihood of bringing Cairney to Newcastle would not be as high. This one hangs in the balance, as it is not yet known whether West Brom want to keep Gayle.
