Rangers are in pursuit of Millwall defender Mahlon Romeo as they look to fill the potential void which could be left by the much-wanted James Tavernier, according to the Express.

The newspaper claim on their website that the Ibrox outfit have been tracking the 23-year-old Championship star as they plot a bargain raid, the 12-cap Antigua and Barbuda international out of contract at the end of the season.

It is stated that with Tavernier gaining plenty of admirers from south of the border the Gers are looking for someone who can at first compete with him for a starting role before becoming first choice if they choose to cash in on their captain, identifying the Millwall man as a capable fit.

Good move for Rangers?

Replacing Tavernier is no easy task and there will be plenty of worried individuals around Ibrox when the summer comes around.

He has proven himself to be one of the best full backs in Scotland at both ends of the pitch, scoring on a remarkable basis for a defender, and so filling that void requires a certain type of player.

Without a single goal and just one assist in his 30 Championship appearances, it does not appear as though Romeo is cut from the same cloth as his fellow right back, focusing much more on the defensive side of his game.

Still, at 23-years-old he has plenty of time to develop into what Steven Gerrard wants him to be and if they can snap him up for nothing, it would represent exceptional business.

Likely to happen?

It all depends on who else is in the market for a cheap right back.

Rangers might be giants in Scotland but they are not the same draw as a Premier League or even a big Championship club and if either of those are hunting Romeo’s capture then Gerrard can wave goodbye to his chances of sealing a bargain.

Still, the manager himself has pulling power, so do not rule the Gers out of this one too soon.
