With the gulf of a whole division between them – and no sign of that changing any time soon – it is not often that fierce east London rivals West Ham and Millwall get the chance to get one over each other.

With on the pitch meetings at a premium, it could be a case of the two sides trying to trump each other off the pitch to earn bragging rights – although everyone would hope not in the violent manner that the rivalry has provided in the past.

With one battling for survival in the Championship and the other pushing to try and be the best of the rest outside the top six in the Premier League, they will both be looking for very different things when it comes to the transfer window – but could it be somewhere for the Irons to seal a moral victory over the Lions?

If the Express is to be believed, absolutely, with the newspaper reporting that Manuel Pellegrini’s side have been launching scouting missions for 23-year-old Mahlon Romeo as he heads into the final months of his contract at Millwall.

A right back, the 12-cap Antigua and Barbuda international might not be what the London Stadium faithful want to see in terms of signings but a free transfer and the chance to stick the knife in their fierce rivals would surely leave them laughing all the way to the bank.

He has been a mainstay for the Championship strugglers and to lose him for nothing would be a bitter blow – all the more reason for the Hammers to chase his capture.

Whether the Irons turn their scouting missions into something more concrete remains to be seen but the fans might want it for nothing more than to see them rub salt into the wounds at the Den.
