Robbie Savage has revealed he dumped following Celtic for Rangers due to the constant ribbing of TV sidekick Chris Sutton.

The BT Sport pundits regularly clash over the two Glasgow giants and, in an Open Goal interview with Si Ferry, former midfielder Savage explained his Old Firm stance.

He said: “My beloved Rangers…obviously I have a bit of banter with Chris. I just go against Chris Sutton. Listen, I don’t support either Celtic or Rangers. I was a big fan of Celtic with Martin O’Neill, my ex-boss, John Hartson, my old room-mate, Neil Lennon.

“I’m a friend of Steven Gerrard’s so now I’ve gone on the Rangers side of the fence and I just love hammering Chris when Rangers get a result and Celtic don’t.

“He’s a great lad. We’re good friends. But even when Celtic are winning, he just goes on about how Rangers lost.

“Chris winds me up that when Rangers were in division three, I offered to play for them for nothing and they didn’t take that opportunity.”

OPINION

The TV banter between Sutton and Savage about the Old Firm giants usually ends with the former Celtic striker pointing out how the ex-Wales international couldn’t even get a game at Rangers in their post-administration days. By then, Savage was at the end of his career and looking for one final shot at the big time. He certainly isn’t a true Bear, admitting he actually supports neither Rangers or Celtic properly, but he just enjoys winding up Sutton, whose barbs at the Ibrox giants whenever they lose certainly wind up plenty of their fans. They care about what the ex-Bhoys says, though. Sutton knows his onions when it comes to Scottish football and, while his straight-talking grates with Rangers fans at times, it’s partly because he’s usually right. Not on one thing, though. Sutton claimed Rangers were the title favourites in January after signing Jermain Defoe on loan. That turned out to be massively wide of the mark.
