Xherdan Shaqiri is a major doubt for Liverpool’s Premier League showdown against Tottenham later this month after being ruled out of Switzerland’s double header this week, according to a report.

The Swiss Football Association says Shaqiri has an inflammation injury in his groin and will not be available for qualifiers in Georgia on Saturday and at home against Denmark three days later.

A newspaper report claim Shaqiri is now a doubt for the Reds’ next Premier League clash, which is against Tottenham on 31 March at Anfield.

OPINION

Shaqiri has been an unused substitute in Liverpool’s last four Premier League matches but he could still have a big role to play in the rest of the season. The word is that Jurgen Klopp’s main concerns over the 27-year-old centre on his positional play and his tracking back. Certainly, with the ball at his feet and a bit of space, he can be deadly. His memorable double against Manchester United was the highlight of a campaign in which he has scored six times from 26 games. Just 11 league starts is far less than the wide attacker would have liked, but Liverpool face a busy period after the international break as they fight for Premier League glory and have a Champions League quarter-final tie against Porto. There could still be opportunities for Shaqiri to demonstrate his capacity for the spectacular and changing the shape and outcome of key games. Liverpool will want him fit and available for the clash v Spurs.
