With Rangers all looking set to end this season without a new trophy in their cabinet then some Gers supporters are no doubt ready to blame Steven Gerrard and call for his head.

Yet just because this season looked so promising that the Gers boss would rack up a trophy, it doesn’t mean he has failed at Ibrox if he does indeed end up empty handed.

Dean Saunders remarked on the job Gerrard was doing at Ibrox and shared that he would award him an 8/10 when asked to give him a mark.

“Really really harsh Rob (on Sutton rating Gerrard’s Rangers reign as a 4/10) how well could he do when he took the job?” pondered Saunders in a clip uploaded to Savage’s Twitter account.

“He’s put all the interest back in Scottish football, I got to be honest I lost a bit of interest as Celtic were running away with it, and he has put the league back in shape again, eight (when asked what mark).”

Saunders’ comments are a must read as they’ve effectively a reality check for the section of Rangers fans who want Gerrard out or believe the manager has done a poor job.

Ahead of the Liverpool legend taking the reigns, no one could confidently say that he could get a team together capable of competing for honours, yet that’s exactly what he did.

Few outsiders would have confidently backed the Gers to rack up a victory in the Old Firm derby or push Celtic for the title in the way that they did.

While in recent weeks, it has all fallen apart for Gerrard at Rangers, as Saunders points out, how well could he really be expected to do upon taking the job?

The Gers were disappointing last season and there were several areas of their team that didn’t look up to scratch, but Gerrard has addressed a lot of the issues and improved several players in the process.

It may not be a trophy that some fans want, but Saunders’ remarks put everything in perspective and Rangers fans should be confident Gerrard is the right man to lead their club forward as a result.
