Steven Gerrard has been hit with a huge fitness blow ahead of the Old Firm clash v Celtic at the end of March.

Scott Arfield has pulled out of the Canada squad and could miss the Celtic clash, according to the Scottish Sun.

Canada are set to face final French Guiana in Vancouver in a Concacaf Nations League qualifier and they need a win.

However, Arfield has been forced to pull out of the clash in what the Scottish Sun claimed was a “hammer blow”.

Arfield missed the 1-1 draw against Kilmarnock and Gerrard will now be sweating on the fitness of his midfielder ahead of a must-win game at Celtic.

OPINION

The title might already have flown from Rangers’ hands but there won’t be any need to motivate them ahead of the huge Old Firm clash at Parkhead. A win against Celtic will give them a slim hope of catching Neil Lennon’s side but they’re going to need everyone available and everyone to be on their very best form. That’s been sorely lacking recently in a string of disappointing results that have seen them crash out of the Scottish Cup and fall ten points behind Celtic at the top. Lose and they’ll be 13 points behind which would be humiliating for Gerrard and a worry that Rangers haven’t really made up much ground on their rivals in a season where Celtic have been far from their best too. A win and the gap would be seven points and there’s always a chance that the title race could spark into life again. Arfield would be a big miss – Rangers fans will be hoping he recovers in time to play a week on Sunday.
