Ask any Tottenham fan about their ambitions for the future and they will say that there are not yet at the level that they want to be at.

Having established themselves as top four regulars in the Premier League – that status coming under serious threat this season from the chasing pack of Arsenal and Manchester United – the next aim is to pick up some silverware, their last trophy coming back in 2008 in the form of the League Cup.

The men responsible for the Lilywhites’ rise up the table are undoubtedly Daniel Levy and Mauricio Pochettino, the senior pair working in tandem to provide a quality football team for a fraction of what their rivals are spending on a regular basis.

As such, the future of the Argentine is of paramount importance to their hopes but even with a new long-term contract that was signed last summer, Pochettino is not thinking too far into the future.

He admitted to Mundo Deportivo, as quoted by football.london: “I have four more years on my contract.”I enjoy it day to day and whatever happens tomorrow will be a consequence of today. But I don’t look at things too far ahead or think very long term. When I signed my contract I did it because I was happy.”

Reading between the lines, Pochettino was happy to sign on the dotted line but that does not mean he is going to stick around if he does not get what he wants and with a lack of signings over the last 12 months, that admission has got to strike fear into the hearts of Tottenham fans.

There has got to be ambition shown by Levy and while the new stadium is a great marker in the club’s history, it means absolutely nothing if they do not push on to keep touch with those at the top of the table.

A worryingly honest admission from the Spurs boss shows his future lies where he wants it and that a contract is only worth something if he is happy with how things are going – now it is up to the club to make sure he has no reason to leave.
