Celtic may kickstart negotiations to sign Aberdeen defender Scott McKenna after he was out of reach last summer, according to the Scottish Sun.

The newspaper claim the Dons have set a £10million asking price on the 22-year-old after he established himself as one of the outstanding centre-backs in the SPL.

The Scottish Sun report Celtic could turn to McKenna to solve their central defensive problems as they prepare to wave goodbye to Dedryck Boyata and Filip Benkovic this summer.

OPINION

The imminent departure of Boyata when his contract ends, as well as Benkovic returning to parent club Leicester, means Celtic are in dire need of a centre-back who can be relied upon to deliver three or four solid performances on the trot. That can’t be said of Kristoffer Ajer, Jozo Simunovic and Jack Hendry, who are set to be the club’s only recognised centre-halves when the regular starters exit at the end of the season. McKenna is a reliable operator with the potential to be an outstanding one, certainly at SPL level. He already looks the best centre-back in the division and he could be a mainstay of the Scotland national team for the next decade. McKenna has already skippered the Tartan Army and can form a telepathic club and country relationship with Kieran Tierney if the Hoops can make Aberdeen an offer for the defender in the summer that they simply cannot refuse.
