Charlie Adam and Roddy Forsyth ripped into James Forrest for his performance for Scotland in Thursday’s humiliating defeat to Kazakhstan.

The Celtic winger played 81 minutes of what many observers were calling today the most abject display in the national team’s history.

“James Forrest and John McGinn, whom I expected a lot of in midfield, one was anonymous and the other was even worse. I don’t think I’ve seen either of them play worse for Scotland,” BBC journalist and pundit Forsyth told Radio Five Live.

Former Scotland midfielder Adam added: “I thought they looked lost. John is normally energetic and has good quality on the ball. He never adapted to the astroturf. There is a reason these type of nights happen and, for me, it is application and imposing yourself on the opponent. We never did it at any stage.”

OPINION

What was remarkable about Forrest’s anonymous display on the right flank against the team rated 117th in the world is that he has been in such stellar form for Celtic and is one of the player-of-the-year contenders. Of course, Forrest cannot stand alone in the dock as the inquest continues into a performance that plumbed new depths even by Scotland’s lamentable standards of the last 20 years. The likes of McGinn, Oli McBurnie and Graeme Shinnie were just as bad, if not worse. But, following a spate of withdrawals and injuries, this was the youngest side sent out by Scotland for a competitive game since the 1970s. It was up to the likes of 27-year-old Forrest, a 26-times international and veteran of so many Celtic European campaigns, not to mention a key figure in their total domination of the domestic game, to set the standards and lead the way. That he failed so miserably to do so should haunt him for a long time to come.
