OPINION

Coady has developed into a top quality centre-back who led Wolves to Championship promotion and has been an integral member of the side that has taken to the Premier League like a duck to water. Remarkably, the 26-year-old has played every minute of all 30 of the Midlands clubs’ league fixtures this season. That is testament to his consistency and durability, not to mention ability to follow the exacting instructions of manager Nuno Espirito Santo. Is that enough to make the Liverpool academy product England calibre? Well, yes, it is, actually. Gareth Southgate has named four centre-backs in his latest squad – John Stones, Harry Maguire, Michael Keane and James Tarkowski. Coady is not in Stones’ class, nor Maguire’s, even though he’s had a better season than the Leicester City man. Certainly, the Wolves skipper can be disappointed to be overlooked in favour of Keane and Tarkowski. What will be especially galling is that Coady will be slip further down the pecking order when the best English centre-back of the lot, Liverpool’s Joe Gomez, returns from injury.
