Tim Sherwood has said that if Harry Kane left Tottenham, it would be for Real Madrid.

Talking in an extensive ESPN feature on the Tottenham striker, Sherwood admitted it “would be a wrench” for the 25-year-old to leave north London, but added, “That chance to wear that white shirt of Real Madrid, quadruple your wage bill, win Champions League titles… It’s hard to turn down.

“He certainly wouldn’t go anywhere else in the Premier League. If he goes anywhere, it would be Real Madrid. He’s a Real Madrid kind of player.”

Kane himself has always refused to talk about his future but he did say to ESPN that he wants to win trophies and that it could be difficult for Tottenham to keep improving with the new stadium. They’re words that will worry Tottenham fans.

“It’s something you assess along the way,” Kane said. “A lot of people look at it and say this is maybe the best team we’ve had, maybe the best team we’ll ever have, and the best manager, but it’s important that we have something to show for it.

“It’s not just, when we look back in 10 years, we had a great team. It’s, ‘Look what they did. Look what they won.’ The challenge for us is, can we keep going up and up and up? It’s going to be difficult in the next couple of years with the stadium and the finances.”

OPINION

Kane’s loyalty to Tottenham is beyond reproach. He could have moved and more than doubled his salary last summer but he’s stuck with the team that he’s been with for the past 10 years. A player like Kane deserves to win, though, and there has to be a question of how long he’ll stay at Spurs without any silverware. Sherwood seems convinced that he’ll follow Luka Modric and Gareth Bale in moving to Real Madrid if he does leave the club. That would leave Mauricio Pochettino with a massive hole in his team but a load of money to spend replacing him. That would seem catastrophic to most Tottenham fans but it’s a reality that could come closer with each barren season in Tottenham. Spurs are still in the Champions League this season but they’re not fancied by the bookies and it would be a major upset if they got past Man City in the quarters, let alone went on to lift the trophy. Perhaps Pochettino should prioritise the domestic cups next season – the riches of the Premier League and Europe might be the biggest prizes, but they also seem beyond this Tottenham squad at the moment.
