Schar wanted by Tottenham

Newcastle United defender Fabian Schar is on the radar of Tottenham once again, according to the Mirror.

The newspaper reports on their website that Spurs are interested in the £40,000-a-week [Spotrac] centre-back, but they also have competition from North London rivals Arsenal, who are just as keen.

The report adds that both clubs monitored the 27-year-old when he was at previous club Basel, and that they are particularly blown away by how he has coped with the demands of English football.

Good move for Tottenham?

There is no doubting that Schar is an overall excellent defender – after all, he did get the goal of the month award for February – but whether Spurs actually need him is another question. They already have centre-backs in the shapes of Jan Vertonghem, Toby Alderweireld and Davinson Sanchez – not forgetting Juan Foyth – so why on earth would they need Schar? It hints that one of these players may leave in the summer, but at the moment, a move for Schar seems pointless.

Likely to happen?

Can you see Newcastle letting go of one of their best defenders any time soon? Absolutely not. There is no way that they are going to offload the Swiss to one of the Premier League’s top teams after the way he has performed this season. That means that they would then have to find a suitable replacement and potentially undo all of the hard work that went into signing him, so the possibility of Spurs – as well as Arsenal – signing him in the summer is very slim indeed.
