Leeds United defender Pontus Jansson revealed that Marcelo Bielsa told him to specifically deal with Bristol City attacker Famara Diedhiou when the two sides clashed on Saturday.

The 28-year-old Leeds centre-back shared that Bielsa informed him to focus on stopping the 26-year-old forward and revealed he enjoying battle the player despite it being a hard task.

Jansson divulged Bielsa’s instruction after talkSPORT’s Ian Abrahams revealed that he thought the player’s interactions with Diedhiou reminded him of the stuff you used to see in games 20 to 30 years ago.

“Yea it was a nice battle, Marcelo said to me from the first minute just to deal with him for 90minutes and I knew it would be a good battle, a respectful battle, but not an ugly one but a hard one, so it was nice,” said Jansson in an interview with Abrahams, as uploaded to IGTV.

OPINION

Jansson and Diedhiou went toe-to-toe throughout Leeds’ 1-0 victory over Bristol City and it’s fair to say the centre-back should be declared the winner. After all the 26-year-old was unable to get on the scoresheet for his side, despite constantly trying to force the issue. It’s understandable while Bielsa told Jansson to keep on Diedhiou as the 26-year-old has been in impressive form this season. Diedhiou has scored 11, while assisting three, in his 32 outings across all competition and does have the skills to cause any side in the Championship problems. However Jansson was in top-form and always alert in order to make sure Diedhiou couldn’t be a game-changer for his side. The win over Bristol City was an important one for Leeds as it keeps them comfortably in the race for automatic promotion. The Whites currently sit 2nd in the table and know they can’t afford to drop points as Sheffield United are hot on their tail.
