OPINION

Deandre Yedlin is very good at running in straight lines. The US international must be one of the quickest players in the Premier League, and when he puts his foot down and builds up a head of steam, he looks almost unstoppable – a razor sharp juggernaut who could leave anybody in his dust. His problems arise, however, when he is called upon to do anything other than run in a straight line. Against Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon, the full-back looked lost for large spells of the first half, and got caught out on more than one occasion by runners in behind him. The fact that Newcastle have shifted to a three at the back and started to employ wing backs means that Yedlin is able to exercise his natural attacking talents more often, but that shouldn’t mean that his defensive duties are neglected, but there were numerous times against the Cherries where Yedlin looked like a winger first and a defender second. Perhaps the 25-year-old should focus on his primary job first, and spend less time looking listless and out of position. His form has been poor recently, and unless it improves sharpish, he could be out on his ear.
