Newcastle United midfielder Mo Diame will have an automatic extension on his contract if he plays three more games, according to the Daily Star.

The newspaper reports on their website that the 31-year-old will have his contract – which expires in the summer – extended by a year if he reaches the required amount of games for this season.

The report also states that Brighton and Crystal Palace have been alerted to the situation surrounding the 31-year-old’s contract at St James’ Park.

The Chronicle reported earlier on Tuesday that clubs from Spain, Italy and Turkey were keen on signing Diame – who has a total of 234 league appearances – on a free transfer amid the player’s uncertain future.

OPINION

Selling to your league rivals is never a good idea is it? The same applies to Newcastle here. Letting Diame leave for either Brighton or Palace is not a wise move in the slightest, and they must prevent this from happening at all costs. The likelihood of him playing another three games has been boosted by the fact that Sean Longstaff has been ruled out for the rest of the season. If the 21-year-old had been fit, Diame would not be playing as many games, and the possibility of his extension being triggered would have been very slim. However, the probability of proven ace leaving altogether is not as slim considering all the furore surrounding his contract at the moment. Both parties want different things, so who knows what would happen. That being said, do not be surprised if either Brighton or Palace do make a concrete move in the future.
