Wolverhampton Wanderers are set to smash their 38-year attendance record this month after seeing their FA Cup clash against Manchester United sell out, according to journalist Tim Nash.

The reporter, who has close connections at Molineux after working as Wolves correspondent for the Express and Star, claims on his personal Twitter account that the tie, set to be played on Saturday 16 March, will be the biggest number of fans at the ground since March 10 1981, when the midlands outfit played Middlesbrough in a FA Cup quarter final.

That game was the biggest attendance after changes to the rules regarding spectators, with the highest ever attendance standing at 61,315 against Liverpool back in 1939.

Opinion

Wolves fans have had plenty to celebrate on their return to the Premier League this season but they have also impressed on their cup run, with the chance to sink FA Cup legends Manchester United up next. It will be an amazing sight to see Molineux packed to the rafters and if they can continue to sell out on a regular basis, then it will only be a matter of time until the club look to expand the size of their stadium. The club might have come under fire for their use of fireworks, pyrotechnics and light show this season but there is no doubting it creates an incredible atmosphere and sets every game up as a spectacle. This month’s clash against Manchester United could well prove to be one of the biggest games of the club’s season and the proverbial roof will be launched off into the stratosphere if the club can secure a famous victory in the cup.
