Liverpool have been rocked by another injury scare during the international break as Trent Alexander-Arnold heads back to Melwood for treatment on a back injury, it has been confirmed.

The Merseyside giants announced on their official website on Wednesday night that Alexander-Arnold has withdrawn from the England squad with a back injury.

He will return to Liverpool and miss the national team’s Euro 2020 qualifiers against Czech Republic and Montenegro.

OPINION

There is no word on the severity of Alexander-Arnold’s injury, and whether he is a doubt for the resumption of the domestic programme, starting with Sunday’s week’s home Premier League clash against Tottenham at Anfield. One thing is for sure: the brilliant young right-back is a vital player who Liverpool need fit and firing. Jurgen Klopp is powerless over how his stars cope with the travel and mental and physical demands of playing for their countries during the international break. He will merely be praying any injuries are minor ones. At least it should be a comfort that Alexander-Arnold, who has followed Xherdan Shaqiri and Andrew Robertson in pulling out of games this week due to injury, was suffering from the back problem before he joined up with the England squad. Losing the 20-year-old against Spurs, and for any subsequent fixtures, would be a massive blow to Liverpool.
