OPINION
Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic didn’t have the finest of afternoons in his team’s 1-1 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday. The Croatian international was pretty anonymous at Stamford Bridge and didn’t really influence the game in any meaningful way. Blues supporters were over the moon when the club brought Kovacic in from Real Madrid this past summer but he hasn’t quite made the sort of impact that people were expecting. There’s no doubt that he has tremendous talent, and he’s still only 24 years of age, but it’s a struggle at the moment to see how he got games for two of the biggest teams in Europe in Inter Milan and Madrid. He doesn’t bring much creativity, which is ostensibly what he’s in the team to do. Maurizio Sarri seemingly has a far more impactful midfielder at his disposal in Ruben Loftus-Cheek, yet the Italian continues to turn to Kovacic and Ross Barkley. It was the former’s chance to impress on Sunday, but in that task he very much failed.

You watch Kovacic play and can't help but question how he was ever good enough to get minutes for Real Madrid. He's Everton/Watford level of quality at best IMO.

Terrible idea to play Kovacic against teams who defend deeply, offers absolutely nothing. Just a walking liability.
