Davie Provan has claimed that Steven Gerrard will not stay with Rangers for long, and his comments will ring fear into the hearts of the Ibrox faithful.
The ex-Celtic man has suggested that the former Liverpool ace is using the club as an audition process for a better club in England, with a return to Anfield hailed as a potential temptation.
Gerrard has done a fantastic job at reinvigorating the Gers, and fans will be massively concerned about the prospect of him leaving as it is, without Provan throwing fuel on the fire.
Writing in his column for the Scottish Sun, he said: “Put it this way, Gerrard will be watching events elsewhere with interest. In particular, the spanking Real Madrid took from Ajax in midweek.
“That fourth consecutive home defeat for Real will spell the end for Santiago Solari. Along with Mauricio Pochettino and Jose Mourinho, Jurgen Klopp would be well in the frame to replace the Argentine. You get my drift.
It’s difficult to say how much notice there should be taken of Proven’s comments. Obviously, as a Celtic legend, he is always up for a bit of gentle ribbing when it comes to the Gers, but it’s hard to look too far past his comments.
Despite the job Gerrard has done at Ibrox, how could he turn down a potential return to Anfield? He is Liverpool through and through, and you get the impression that he would walk over broken glass for the Reds.
That being said, Rangers and their fans are not stupid, and they have known that since the first day he walked into the club.
There are, however, a lot of ifs and maybes in Proven’s statement, and that should be of some comfort to the blue half of Glasgow.
Ultimately, this all hinges on if Klopp would go to Real Madrid, and if they would want him. Both of those chances look slim, and then add to that the factor of whether or not the Reds are in a position to take a gamble on such a young manager, and you have to say that it doesn’t look like Gerrard will be offered the hot seat any time soon.
Maybe one day in the future, yes, but for now, Rangers can rest easy knowing that Proven is just blowing hot air.
