Samuel Saiz may be back at Leeds United at the end of the season, according to Phil Hay.

The Yorkshire Evening Post correspondent explained in a Twitter exchange with a United fan that the terms of the Spanish playmaker’s loan move to Getafe in January mean he could make a United return in the summer.

Hay explained Saiz’s loan does not include an obligation for it to be converted into a permanent transfer at the end of the campaign.

OPINION

This is a significant update on the future of a Leeds big name. Saiz’s return to Spanish football hasn’t yet worked out as he hoped, which is a problem for both the player and his parent club, Leeds. As Hay explains, Getafe are not obliged to buy the £3million 2017 United signing, despite a reported agreement there is a view to the transfer being made permanent in the summer for a fee of around £6million. That would represent good business for Leeds, after they bafflingly bowed to the player’s demand to return to his homeland in December, midway through their promotion-chasing campaign. Yet, there appears a real danger the 28-year-old will be back in the Leeds ranks this summer pining for his homeland after failing to make a mark in La Liga over the last two months. Saiz has failed to score in nine appearances for Getafe and has been an unused substitute for the last three league fixtures after dropping down the pecking order.
