Everton pulled out an absolute masterclass against Chelsea on Sunday afternoon, much to the surprise of pretty much everybody.

After a drab first half, the Toffees kicked it up a notch with a comprehensive performance that will made ears prick up across the Premier League.

The result masked some real issues, however, and as good as the second half was, the first was just as bad.

A large part of the problem was that Marco Silva’s side lacked any real cutting edge going forward, with Dominic Calvert Lewin proving to be a fairly ineffective leading man at the point of the attack.

The youngster clearly has a lot of potential, but he is yet to realise it, and for all of his promise, he lacks the know how and cunning of a properly experienced Premier League striker.

That was evident in the first half when he spurned a perfectly good opportunity to give his side the lead by ballooning a close range header over the bar after a sumptuous delivery from Gylfi Sigurdsson.

It didn’t cost the Toffees this week, but it could have, and it has done in the past.

If Marco Silva is serious about improving this side, he needs a proper goalscorer, and not just hot prospect who might come good.

The young forward looked out of his depth against Chelsea, and it has happened one too many times this season to be chalked down to an off day. The Toffees need a proper goalscorer and Calvert-Lewin’s future has got to be considered.
