OPINION

After two transfer windows of no action whatsoever it seems about time Tottenham stepped things up and took the game to their rivals in the Premier League.

New recruits seem an absolute must, not only to improve the squad but to fill the voids being left by their departing stars, Mousa Dembele already looking like a big miss after his January exit.

With the future of Toby Alderweireld seemingly away from north London, the Mirror claiming that Manchester United, Juventus and Barcelona are all keen on pouncing on his release clause, a new centre back also seems a necessity – but who steps into that gaping void?

How does a 25-year-old World Cup winner at Champions League quarter finalists sound Spurs fans?

That man is Samuel Umtiti of Barcelona – a reminder that the Catalan heavyweights are one of the clubs keen on Alderweireld – with Calcio Mercato claiming that the French international is bound for the exit in Spain, Manchester United and Manchester City both reported keen on his capture.

If their rivals are keen on his capture then so should Tottenham – after all, they will be looking for a new defender, but could Alderweireld be the man to seal his capture?

If Barcelona are truly keen on the Belgian then surely the Lilywhites can blow their rivals away by offering up a swap – which would prove to be a very savvy deal for Mauricio Pochettino.

Not only would they be strengthening themselves with a 27-cap international and filling a huge hole in their side but they would be frustrating their Premier League counterparts at the same time – talk about killing three birds with one stone.
