Rangers have reportedly been joined by a number of clubs in the chase to sign Maritimo midfielder Josip Vukovic, which would surely make it sweeter for the fans if can sign the enforcer.

According to talkSPORT, Chelsea, Wolves, Leicester and Watford have all been checking on the 26-year-old, who has been in “impressive” form for Maritimo this season.

Vukovic, reportedly valued at £4million, has made 19 appearances in all competitions for the Portuguese club this season, playing well since signing from Olimpik Donetsk in the summer transfer window.

However it seems as though the Croatian defensive midfielder might only have a short spell at Maritimo, with clubs across the UK in the race to sign him.

Rangers were the first to be reportedly in the hunt for Vukovic.

A Bola reported earlier in February that the midfielder has been impressing the Gers’ scouts.

Now it seems that it might be even harder for Rangers to sign him, especially with clubs like Chelsea and Wolves joining in.

It would be a huge coup for Steven Gerrard if he is able to beat those two clubs to Vukovic.

Not only is he clearly a good player, but Chelsea obviously have a significant pull and Wolves’ link to Jorge Mendes has seen them stuff their squad full of players from the Portuguese top-flight in the last couple of years.

Will Vukovic be the next import from Iberia at Molineux?

Or will Gerrard be able to steal the defensive midfielder away from Maritimo before the English clubs have their chance?

He already has a couple of Croatian players at Ibrox in Borna Barisic and Nikola Katic, so that could certainly have a sway on Vukovic’s final decision.

Either way, Rangers fans should be thrilled if they are able to sign him up this summer.
