Chris Sutton has blasted Alfredo Morelos, claiming that the Rangers forward is the reason as to why the club has not done better this season.

Steven Gerrard has certainly improved things at Ibrox since taking charge, but the Gers are still failing to win games they should be winning and are yet to seriously threaten Celtic in their bid to win a third domestic treble in a row.

Sutton believes that Morelos’ ill discipline, which has led to him being suspended for multiple big games this term, is the reason behind why the Light Blues are not doing better than they are.

“I blame Morelos for Rangers’ season, where they’re languishing,” said Sutton, as shown by BT Sport Football’s official Twitter account on Sunday morning.

“Steven Gerrard says they’re here to win trophies. Why did they get knocked out of the League Cup? Morelos didn’t play in the semi-final.

He added: “His behaviour, behaving like an idiot on the pitch at times, however good he has been other times, that’s the reason Rangers are where they are. He’s let his manager down.”

OPINION

It is a double-edged sword really. Yes, Rangers are dropping points in games where Morelos is suspended, but when he is playing that are picking up points that they probably wouldn’t if he wasn’t there. Rangers have shown an improvement under Gerrard and a lot of that is down to Morelos’ record in front of goal. He has scored 23 goals in 38 appearances across all competitions and is by far and away the best striker that has graced Ibrox in a very long time, so is it worth having him score so often when you know there’s a risk of him getting sent off? It’s definitely an issue that can be solved anyway. Morelos is still young at 22-years-of-age and he will surely become to realise that he needs to be on the pitch. He is not the reason why Rangers are dropping points in the Scottish Premiership, the reason is that the other players haven’t pulled their weight enough when he is not playing.
