Neil McCann has insisted that Rangers new arrival Glen Kamara is a “terrific footballer” who is reminiscent of club legend Barry Ferguson.

The former Ibrox winger and ex-Dundee boss is a huge admirer of the 23-year-old, who he signed in the summer of 2017 after his release from Arsenal.

“If he gets into the side, I think it will be very difficult to move him,” McCann told BBC Scotland, as quoted by the BBC Sport site. “He’s a real star in the making. He’s still learning the game but I just think he’s a terrific footballer. He moves so well and Rangers are getting a class act.

“His best attributes are sitting in front of the back four and conducting play. He’s not an enforcer. Ross McCrorie and Ryan Jack are more physical. But, for me, he’s a better footballer than both.

“When I look back at my successful time at Rangers, we had Barry Ferguson controlling the tempo. He wasn’t overly physical but he would cover ground so quickly and snuff out danger, change direction, pick a pass. That’s Kamara.”

OPINION

As a nine-times trophy winner at Rangers, McCann knows his stuff. He has also demonstrated he can take that knowledge to the dugout, maintaining Dundee’s top-flight status two seasons ago in the face of considerable odds. One of the key players under McCann was undoubtedly Arsenal academy product Kamara. The central midfielder has the class to add something different to a Rangers midfield that sometimes looks short of real quality. He has not played since the winter break, and was once again named in the reserves side for Monday’s clash against St Johnstone at McDiarmid Park. It appears Steven Gerrard and his staff want to get Kamara up to speed in terms of his fitness before pitching him into first-team action. That is wise. Kamara is not just a signing for the here and now, he is one for the future, too, and can make a real difference in the final months of the campaign when he is fully match fit.
