Rangers midfielder Steven Davis is no doubt one of the most experienced players Steven Gerrard currently has in his side.

This means that he will be consistent all the time, right?

Wrong – in fact, that was the complete opposite in his dismal outing against St Mirren on Saturday despite the fact that the Gers won 4-0. He lacked quality and confidence on the ball, which is so unlike the 34-year-old.

He has tonnes of experience so there is no excuse for him to be as poor as he was on Saturday, and Gerrard is no doubt contemplating the axe for the veteran midfielder.

It may seem harsh, but the manager has a title race to think about and he cannot have players hampering the progress that the team are currently making.

Gerrard does have players like Ryan Jack waiting in the wings if need be, and that is an option he may have to start considering if Davis does not up his game imminently.

He lost his way during the match and looked a complete shadow of the player that Gerrard made the effort to sign in January, which is a real shame.

Davis needs to assert himself more convincingly after this performance, as the fans all know that he is capable of a lot more than he is letting on at the moment.

All in all, he definitely did not make the impact he was hoping he would make against St Mirren.

Gerrard may not want to think about dropping him so soon, but what choice could he have if Davis does not show signs of improvement?

Rangers were arguably lucky to sign a player of his experience, so he must now go out there and prove just that – or face the axe.
