Chris Sutton weighed in on three different incidents in Celtic’s 1-0 win over Kilmarnock on Sunday but refused to blame the referee for any of them.

The BBC pundit claimed that referee Robert Madden was right to book Hoops midfielder Scott Brown for his challenge on Greg Taylor and was right to dismiss Kilmarnock defender Kirk Broadfoot for his lunge on the Celtic captain.

“It was a yellow card offence the first one (Brown) and Kirk Broadfoot or as Ally McCoist calls him Kick Broadfoot did see red and he should have gone,” said Sutton on BBC Radio 5 Live (Sunday February 17th, 18:07).

“Then Scott Brown he’s gone.”

Sutton then focused on Brown getting sent off due to picking up his second yellow card for celebrating and while he agreed with the decision due to football’s laws, he didn’t seemed overly pleased.

“It wasn’t the referee’s fault today, Bobby Madden’s second yellow for Scott Brown, y’know I think by letter of the law he has to give him a second yellow and send him off, but it shouldn’t be that way,” added Sutton at (18:08).

“Should it?”

OPINION

Sutton gave his opinion on the three memorable incidents in Celtic’s 1-0 win over Kilmarnock and appeared to give referee Madden his backing. However it seems the pundit believes that while Brown got his second yellow due to breaking the letter of the law, it shouldn’t be that way. It makes sense that some common sense should be applied to situations such as Brown’s. The veteran midfielder celebrated madly like anyone would have over scoring a late winning goal and while he did go into the crowd, which saw him receive his marching orders for that turn of events, it was sad to say the least. While Celtic haven’t mathematically won the league title or anything like that, they did make a huge stride to getting their hands on the league championship once again. When it all comes down to, who knows in hindsight, Brown’s last-gasp winner could have been the goal that sealed the deal for them. Therefore it’s silly that his red card overshadowed a positive moment.
