Brendan Rodgers is quitting Celtic for Leicester City and is taking assistants Chris Davies, Kolo Toure and Glenn Driscoll with him, according to a reliable journalist.

Scottish Daily Mail correspondent Stephen McGowan reported on his personal Twitter account on Tuesday morning the bombshell news that Rodgers is leaving Parkhead despite being in sight of a third consecutive treble.

The northern Irishman is set to be replaced by ex-Hoops boss Neil Lennon in a stunning reshuffle that could mean he is in charge for Saturday’s Scottish Cup tie against his own former club Hibernian.

OPINION

Wow. No-one saw this coming 24 hours ago, and certainly not this quickly. Claude Puel was only sacked on Sunday, shortly before Rodgers oversaw a 4-1 win over Motherwell. To leave now, with three months of the season remaining and eight-in-a-row within grasp, is a stunning move from the northern Irishman, and one that will massively tarnish what has been such a memorable reign. It is a clear sign that Rodgers thinks he has nothing more to prove at Celtic, or to achieve. He has won everything domestically going, and feels the club are well on course to secure another title. Yet, the question begging to be asked is this, why leave now? Why not wait until the summer? Leicester are 12th in the Premier League and have no chance of securing anything other than a mid-table finish. The answer, as it usually is in elite football, will be money. Leicester have no doubt persuaded Rodgers with a lucrative contract that will secure him a massive pay rise and, no doubt, a bumper bonus if the club edge their way up the league table.
