Lee McCulloch heaped praise on Rangers forward Jermain Defoe and revealed teammate Alfredo Morelos will learn something from him everyday.

The ex-Gers midfielder raved about Defoe’s movement as he described it as absolutely brilliant and also complimented the veteran’s ability to read the game.

McCulloch claimed that Morelos could benefit from playing with Defoe even if Steven Gerrard doesn’t opt to use them as a partnership to lead the line.

“Whether he plays with him on a matchday or not, the one thing for sure is that Morelos will be learning from Defoe every single day,” McCulloch said, as quoted by Evening Times.

“Defoe is well known for his finishing ability, but if you watch his movement it is absolutely brilliant. He is so sharp and he knows where to be when the ball is in different positions, he reads the game so well.

“Morelos can only learn from that and playing with Defoe can only help his game, whether that is as a single striker or as part of a two.”

OPINION

Can anyone really disagree with McCulloch? Defoe has a wealth of experience screaming out for Morelos to benefit from and even if the two forwards don’t end up playing up front together in a 4-4-2, they can work well together off the pitch. Defoe has played total of 496 times in the English Premier League, scoring 163 goals in the process, and has 57 caps for England, so clearly he knows what it takes to be clinical forward at the highest level. While Morelos has been prolific during his Gers career so far, given the fact he is still only 22-years-old, he can definitely learn a thing or two to say the least. The weakest area of the Colombian’s game as it stands is clearly his temperament. If Defoe could find a way to help Morelos control his reactions on the pitch , that have seen red cards come his way, the player would be better for it. Therefore while Gerrard will have difficulty fitting both these forwards in his usual system, even if they don’t play together Defoe’s potential influence on Morelos can only be a deemed a positive.
