Alan Pardew has sympathised with Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino after his outburst following the 2-1 loss to Burnley on Saturday.

The Clarets sealed all three points courtesy of goals from Chris Wood and Ashley Barnes, the first of which caused his emotions to run high after referee Mike Dean awarded Burnley a corner when he thought it was a goal kick – something which led to them scoring.

Pardew says that he would have been the same as Pochettino in this situation, and added that he does not blame him for his outburst.

“Your self control is obviously put to one side, because the emotions got the better of Pochettino, that is why he has gone up to the referee. He got very close to the referee, and that will probably get him in trouble,” he said on beIN SPORTS.

“Having said that, Mike Dean, if I was a manager and he had said something to me in that instance, I’m going to react, and the referee would be, in my opinion, best to say nothing.”

OPINION

It is no surprise in the slightest that Pochettino let his emotions get the better of him in his outburst at Dean. His decision to award Burnley the corner ultimately led to them losing the game, although you can argue that Spurs were rather disappointing anyway and deserved to lose. Pochettino had every right to let his emotions be known, but he cannot blame the referee entirely for their defeat on Saturday. Yes, it would have been a pivotal factor, but Burnley were overall the better side and deserved to get the victory on the day. This was a very underwhelming display from Spurs, and this result has effectively ruled them out of the title race completely now. Pardew no doubt knows how Pochettino feels after being a manager himself and experiencing these types of decisions go against him, so he has every right to sympathise with him and the way he reacted.
