Perry Groves was left baffled by how Marco Silva utilised Gylfi Sigurdsson in the 1-0 defeat to Watford on Saturday.

The talkSPORT pundit shared he simply couldn’t understand why the Toffees boss would play the club’s best player, in his opinion, out of position.

Groves added that he thought there was no clear thinking currently at Goodison Park though he was full of praise for Toffees midfielder Tom Davies even though he believed he was also given an unfamiliar role against the Hornets.

“On the team today I agree with your Durham (Adrian) I can’t understand I think Sigurdsson is probably their best player and he is playing him out of position, so it’s the same as Kante at Chelsea and I don’t see the logic,” said Groves on talkSPORT (Saturday February 9th, 16:55).

“Tom Davies is a very good player but he is not a creative player who plays in that position, he is more of a deep-lying midfielder as he makes good tackles and has good running power, so there’s a lot of confusion at Everton.

“I don’t think there is any clear thinking.”

OPINION

While Groves is right about Davies playing in the wrong position, Sigurdsson is not the Toffees’ best player. The 29-year-old attacking midfielder has struggled ever since joining the club even when playing in his preferred No.10 position. While Sigurdsson may go onto claim that being put on the wing, like he seemed to be at times against Watford, is the reason for his struggles, it’s just not the case. In fact it is hard to remember a time when the midfielder constantly delivered the goods for the Toffees as he is often a disappointment in games as he lets them pass him by. Sigurdsson may have 10 goals in his 30 outings this season, but that statistic flatters him. You do feel that if the attacking midfielder doesn’t raise him game shortly then he is heading for a summer exit if the Toffees are able to find someone to take him off their hands.
