OPINION
If Rafa Benitez does leave Newcastle United at the end of the season then fans are going to be nervous wrecks as they wait for Mike Ashley and Lee Charnley to find the Spaniard’s successor. According to the Times, former Huddersfield manager David Wagner is a contender to replace Benitez if he fails to renew his contract, and for some reason many Newcastle fans are raging on Twitter. They could definitely do a lot worse than Wagner. The 47-year-old did a superb job at Huddersfield to get them into the Premier League and avoid relegation in the first season, but due to the Terriers’ lowly reputation compared to the rest of the top-flight, he struggled to lure top players to the Yorkshire and ultimately, they looked doomed to go down this term. There will be a day that Benitez leaves Newcastle and there is no way that Ashley is going to be able to hire a manager with as good a CV as the former Liverpool boss. Wagner is a very progressive manager who could be a very good fit. In no way would this be a “Pardewesque” appointment.

In the 2 season Wagner and Rafa have been in the PL,Wagner has spent £100m more (net) than Rafa yet done a job not even half as good. If he couldn’t do it with a full purse at Huddersfield,he’s got no chance with an empty pocket at #NUFC https://t.co/8eXKUWStJH
