BBC pundit Alan Shearer slammed Chelsea midfielder Jorginho after the 2-0 FA Cup defeat to Man United at Stamford Bridge on Monday night.

Chelsea were two goals down at half-time after Ander Herrera and Paul Pogba struck, to continue Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s record at United and heap more pressure on Maurizio Sarri.

Talking on the BBC coverage of the game (BBC1, 7pm), Shearer slammed Chelsea’s £51million signing Jorginho and blamed him for the first United goal.

“It’s a brilliant goal from a Man United perspective,” Shearer said. “Jorginho is a good passer of the ball and when Chelsea have the ball he’s a positive for the side.

“When they don’t have the ball he’s a negative because he doesn’t smell danger.

“If Kante plays in that position Mata does not get that ball because he can smell danger, and with his pace and his energy he gets round that pitch in front of the back four much better than Jorginho does.

“A positive when Chelsea have the ball but he’s a huge negative when they don’t have the ball. He doesn’t do enough when they’re defending.”

OPINION

Jorginho has come in for some severe criticism this season from pundits and fans alike, and Shearer is the latest to add his voice to the throng. Something isn’t clicking at Chelsea under Sarri and Jorginho seems to be the one slowing play down with his sideways passing. Shearer added another critique last night, saying that he “doesn’t smell danger” which is a real problem for a midfielder who plays in his position. It’s not easy to bench a big-money signing but it takes time for some players to adapt to the Premier League. Jurgen Klopp wasn’t afraid to do it though, with players like Fabinho and Sarri must surely look to do the same with Fabinho after another dreadful display from their £51million-man.
