After what seems like an eternity, the EFL have finally punished Leeds United for the spygate saga. The Yorkshire giants announced on their official website on Monday that the club has pleaded guilty to breaching a rule about acting “with the utmost good faith”, leading the EFL to dish out a £200,000 fine and make up a new rule about spying at training grounds. Even though the punishment is a lot less severe than what some have suggested, many Leeds fans are still raging over the EFL’s decision, but when the club has pleaded guilty, what else can they do? Leeds have admitted they did something that breached the rules, whether you agree with it or not. If they pleaded not guilty then maybe they could have gotten away without a fine, but for the sake of £200,000 and increased distraction from on-the-pitch matters, it wasn’t worth it. So yes, Leeds fans can moan away about this decision, but at the end of the day, it’s the best possible course of action for the club. £200,000 is a drop in the ocean compared to what they will pocket if they are promoted to the Premier League.
