Is this the news that Newcastle United have been waiting to hear? The Telegraph has reported that the chances of Rafa Benitez staying at St James’ Park have risen dramatically in the last few weeks, suggesting that the Spanish boss might actually sign a new deal with the Tyneside club to end the speculation about his future. Benitez’s current contract expires at the end of the season, but understandably, some Newcastle fans have been thrilled with this latest update, with one saying that it is music to his ears. Benitez was a coup when Newcastle first hired him and it will be an ever bigger coup if Mike Ashley and Lee Charnley manage to convince him to stay on past the summer. The ex-Liverpool boss has done an extraordinary job at St James’ Park and pound for pound, he has been one of the best managers in the Premier League since winning the Championship title in 2016/17. It is good that Newcastle fans are getting excited about the future, but they cannot get too carried away – we all know what Ashley is like.
