Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Phil Hay has delivered an update on the future of Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa.

Bielsa has got the Leeds fans talking after being asked about his plans for next season in Monday’s pre-match press conference. He said that his future would be decided at the end of the season and would depend on whether his goals had been met.

Hay responded to a Leeds fan who said that people were only assuming that this meant his goal was promotion. He said that it might just be to make the play-offs.

However, Hay said, “People very close to him in Argentina said when he took the job that he’d only stay on for a second year if Leeds were promoted.”

Hay did say he didn’t know if that had changed but that was what he’d been told.

He posted the update on his personal Twitter page on Tuesday, ahead of Leeds’ crunch evening game against QPR at Loftus Road.

OPINION

There isn’t a week that goes by without a new bit of Leeds drama. You’d almost think they’re making a documentary or something! First spygate, then the ongoing injury problems, then the Daily Mail article from yesterday saying Andrea Radrizzani will have to sell if Leeds don’t get promoted, now this. Leeds fans are desperate for Bielsa to stay. He’s transformed their side and taken them to the brink of the Premier League. He’s made a few decisions that we think were maybe a bit off – namely not signing more players in January to cover for injuries – but it seems the whole football world (with maybe the exception of Frank Lampard) has taken to Bielsa and would love to see him in the Premier League. This ramps up the pressure even more on Leeds though. If they weren’t already playing for the highest of stakes, they’ve now got the possibility of both Bielsa and Radrizzani leaving if they don’t get promoted to the Premier League. Wow.
