OPINION
No doubt about it. This is a sensational move from Rangers, who have seemingly beaten off competition from Premier League clubs to land one of the greatest goalscorers of the modern era. Only six players have scored more goals in the Premier League than Defoe, whose 163 strikes in the competitions have been supplemented by 20 for England. He may be 36 and spent most of the season on the bench at Bournemouth, where Callum Wilson and Josh King are the first choice front men, but the striker is a lean, superbly fit goal machine who stills looks capable of having elite defenders for breakfast. This is a huge coup for Rangers and proof if any were needed of the enormous pull of Steven Gerrard, who has transformed the club since he took the reins last summer. Can Celtic match their Glasgow rivals with a January forward deal of their own as the most exciting title race begins to take real shape.
