Zahavi jets in for Alderweireld talks

|

Paris Saint-Germain have sanctioned super agent Pini Zahavi to open talks in London today (Friday) about a deal to sign Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld, according to Le 10 Sport.

The French publication claim Zahavi will hold discussions to explore the possibility of the Belgium international moving to the French champions as they look to take advantage of his availability in the summer.

Spurs announced today they have exercised their option to extend Alderweireld’s contract until 2020, but could risk losing him for £25million in the summer due to a release clause in his deal.

Good move for Tottenham?

Definitely not. Alderweireld is the club’s outstanding defender and one of the best not only in the Premier League, but across Europe. He has put behind his contract stalemate with the club – talks over a long-term deal collapsed this time last year – and a spell on the sidelines to re-emerge as the team’s most reliable man at the back. He has been excellent this season and crucial to the team being placed third in the league and reaching the Champions League knockout stages. It is no surprise that PSG are keen to find out if the Belgian wants to swap London for Paris. But Spurs can ill afford to lose him, and must batten down the hatches to ensure he stays until the summer.

Likely to happen?

It is inevitable Alderweireld will leave in the summer. He is too good not to attract elite-club interest at £25million, but a transfer this month is less likely. Certainly, it would be no surprise if he ended up at PSG, with the decision to mandate big-name agent Zahavi proof of the club’s intentions.
