Tottenham are in pole position to sign Adrien Rabiot from Paris Saint-Germain this month, according to Sport.

The Spanish newspaper claim the London club have leapfrogged Barcelona in the chase to land the central midfielder, who is out of contract at the French champions at the end of the season.

Sport report that Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has personally held talks with Rabiot and assured him he would have a key role in north London if he signed.

Good move for Tottenham?

Definitely. The midfield colossus, who stands at 6ft 3in (source: Transfermarkt) is the complete package. Technically gifted, powerful and mobile, he can create and destroy, and would immediately become the best orthodox central midfielder on Spurs’ books. The exit of Mousa Dembele has left a mighty hole to fill, and France international Rabiot has the class and composure to step into the boots of the brilliant Belgian. If a deal can be done, it would create proper competition for places in the centre of the park and be the perfect signing to usher in the new White Hart Lane era.

Likely to happen?

Barcelona were huge favourites to seal the deal this time last week after submitting an offer to Rabiot, but their capture of Frenkie De Jong, who will join in the summer, is a gamechanger. Sport report the Catalan giants are still interested in the Frenchman, but the fact Spurs have spaces available in central midfield could prove pivotal in negotiations. It’s almost time for Lilywhites to start getting excited.
