Celtic have no interest in signing midfielder Wil Trapp or central defender Jack Whatmough during the January transfer window despite reports suggesting they are being hunted by the Hoops, according to the Daily Record.

The newspaper definitively claim on their live transfer blog (15:25) that the Bhoys are not looking to sign either the 25-year-old from MLS side Columbus Crew or the Portsmouth enforcer to strengthen the core of their team.

It was stated by the Sun that Whatmough could be signed in a cut price deal, with his contract expiring in the summer, to help replace Dedryck Boyata as the Belgian’s contract comes to an end, but the Daily Records say their sources have rubbished any chance of a move.

Opinion

Two reported targets that it seems the Hoops are not going to snap up this month – and you can imagine there will not be too much disappointment among the Parkhead faithful. Neither Trapp nor Whatmough are really of the pedigree that the Bhoys would like to be looking to sign in a bid to improve their squad and so to have been linked with their captures would have seemed lacking in aspiration from those in the stands. With Rangers now firmly on their tails Celtic know that they are in a serious title race and the business that is being conducted at Ibrox this month will not be helping their fears of seeing their fierce rivals topple them this season at all. There needs to be some serious work done by the transfer team at Parkhead over the next couple of weeks, but it seems Trapp and Whatmough are not the men for Brendan Rodgers.
