Rangers will imminently terminate the contract of flop Carlos Pena, according to La Vanguardia.

The Mexican publication claim the Glasgow giants are working on a deal to get the attacking midfielder off their books as they prepare to give up any chance of securing a transfer fee for the £2.2million summer-of-2017 signing.

The £2.2midfielder has admitted he is struggling to deal with an alcohol addiction following a series of controversial, off-the-field incidents but is eager to reignite his career with a fresh start.

With a salary that the Scottish Sun report is worth £26,000-a-week and that has 18 months still to run, it’s fair to say the cost of the Pena deal has been an exorbitant one. The combination of the transfer fee and wages has further demonstrated not only the flawed judgement of ex-manager Pedro Caixinha, who pushed so hard to sign his countryman and a player he knew well from Mexican football, but also the board for giving too much recruitment power to the manager. The Rangers hierarchy have subsequently righted that wrong through the appointment of director of football Mark Allen, who has brought greater professionalism to the club’s recruitment set-up, which was previously embarrassingly poorly run. Rangers can’t get the wasted Pena money back, but they can at least ensure they never make the same mistake again of handing such an extravagant salary, and paying such a massive fee, to a player with such a troubled background.
